HISTORY OF RAISING OF ADDL DGBR (EAST) GUWAHATI

 

1.       A Large number of road projects were entrusted to BRO in the year 2005-06 which included China Study Group Roads (CSG) Indo China Border Roads (ICBR), Special Accelerated Road Development Programme of North East (SARDP), Prime Minister Package for J&K, National Highway Development Programme (NHDP) and GS works. A need was felt to augment the manpower in BRO and restructuring the organization to make it vibrant, effective and efficient as also to create opportunities for officers and personnel for their career progression.  With this view re-structuring of the organization was undertaken. The sanction of restructuring of BRO was approved by Cabinet Committee on security on 20 Dec 2006. Besides approval of additional manpower of 5701 for making it up to 42646 (originally authorized strength of BRO), a large number of vacancies were created to make the organization effective.

2.       The re-structuring also included an additional vacancy of Addl DGBR for North East Region of the country. The post has been created to boost the construction of roads in the NE Region and provide timely advice and directions to the projects of BRO deployed in the region besides monitoring the progress of various roads in the region. Accordingly Shri B B Lal was appointed as first Addl DGBR (East) on 12 Nov 2012. Owing to ill-health Shri BB Lal was permitted to keep functioning as ADG (East) from the premises of HQ DGBR, Seema Sadak Bhawan, New Delhi. Consequent upon retirement of Shri BB Lal, Dr. Shyam Sunder Porwal, VSM has been appointed as Addl Dir Gen Border Roads (East) wef 08 Mar 2016 vide GOI MoD (BR) ID No. BRDB/04/2341/2014-15/GE.I dated 08 Mar 2016. While appointing the new Addl Dir Gen Border Roads (East) Govt also approved establishment of Addl Dir Gen Border Roads (East), HQ at Guwahati. Accordingly, HQ Addl DGBR (East) has been established at Lankeshwar, Jhalukbari, Guwahati. Presently, the HQ Addl DGBR (East) is headed by Shri M.S Sodhi, CE as Offg Addl DGBR since 01 Jun 2017.
