Project Shivalik was raised on 25 Feb 2009 at Rishikesh to expedite development of strategically important road infrastructure in the state of Uttarakhand. The Project is developing and maintaining 260 Km of GS, 425 Km of National Highways (after handing over 216 Km of NH from Rishikesh to Rudraprayag to Gourikund in Apr 2015 to PWD), 38 Km of MHA and 9.4 Km of Deposit works. The Project has two Task Forces, 21 BRTF and 36 BRTF looking after Joshimath and Harsil sectors including National Highways leading to prestigious five ‘Dhams’ namely Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamnotri and Hemkund Sahib. The Project has adopted the slogan “Jai Badri Vishal”.

State of Uttarakhand has witnessed two major natural calamities in the form of massive cloud bursts in 2012 and abnormal torrential rains in monsoon of 2013 resulting in extensive damage to NHs and other roads under Project Shivalik besides huge loss of human lives and public properties. Number of areas were cut off and large No of devotees were stranded in these natural disasters. Restoration works were taken up at war footings by Project Shivalik and Units to restore the lines of communication. Keeping in view the massive damages all resources of BRO under Project Shivalik including the resources deployed in forward areas were moved immediately to the affected areas. All personnel of Shivalik worked with minimal resources relentlessly under adverse conditions and opened the lines of communication well within the time and PDsC fixed by the State Govt.

In the year 2016, connectivity of Girthidobla – Sumna (ICBR) on 07 Nov 2016 in the most rugged mountainous terrain under adverse climatic conditions has been a major achievement of the Project. Besides Black Topping of Naga – Jadhang (ICBR) with Cold Mix Specifications with the help of plant and improvement of riding surface of National Highways leading to Badirinath and Gangotri has been an another break through. The increased number of pilgrims to these shrines in 2016 is a testimony to the better roads.

During the process of maintenance and construction of the roads especially during the natural calamities, 121 personnel of this Project have laid down their lives till date besides many sustaining injuries. Details are attached as link.
